Seismic Crosshole Tomography and Nonlinear Constrained Optimization

چکیده
When an inverse problem can be formulated so the data are minima of one of the variational problems of mathematical physics, feasibility constraints can be found for the nonlinear inversion problem. These constraints guarantee that optimal solutions of the inverse problem lie in the convex feasible region of the model space. Furthermore, points on the boundary of this convex region can be found in a constructive fashion. Finally, for any convex function over the model space, it is shown that a local minimum of the function is also a global minimum. The proofs in the paper are formulated for de niteness in terms of rst arrival traveltime inversion, but apply to a wide class of inverse problems including electrical impedance tomography.

Crosshole seismic tomography with cross-firing geometry
We have developed a case study of crosshole seismic tomography with a cross-firing geometry in which seismic sources were placed in two vertical boreholes alternatingly and receiver arrays were placed in another vertical borehole. There are two crosshole seismic data sets in a conventional sense. These two data sets are used jointly in seismic tomography. Because the local sediment is dominated...

S U M M A R Y Seismic reflection tomography is a method for determining a subsurface velocity model from the traveltimes of seismic waves reflecting on geological interfaces. From an optimization viewpoint, the problem consists in minimizing a non-linear least-squares function measuring the mismatch between observed traveltimes and those calculated by ray tracing in this model. The introduction...

Seismic tomography is a technique to determine the material properties of the Earth’s subsurface based on the observation of seismograms. This can be stated as a PDE-constrained optimization problem governed by the elastic wave equation. We present a semismooth Newton-PCG method with a trust-region globalization for full-waveform seismic inversion that uses a MoreauYosida regularization to hand...
